 Five Minutes of Pure Sculpture

The Hamburger Bahnhof will be showing works that McCall created beginning in 2003 after a 20-year break. While the early works are shown on 16 mm film, his more recent works are digital projections whose complex forms can only be created with the aid of computers. McCall’s horizontal works will be exhibited for the first time alongside his more recent vertical works, which bathe the exhibition space and the viewer in sculptural light.

This beautiful installation was made between J. Spaceman of the beloved “space rock” band Spiritualized and acclaimed UK-based filmmaker Jonathan Glazer. The impressively complex sound and light installation brings together many creative talents including Glazer, Spaceman, One of UsJuliette Larthe and Undisclosable, to deconstruct and spatially “remix” Spiritualized’s most famous track, “Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space,” translating the musical experience into a uniquely physical one.

Ned Kahn is an environmental artist and sculptor, famous in particular for museum exhibits he has built for the Exploratorium in San Francisco. His works usually involves capturing an invisible aspect of nature and making it visible; examples include building facades that move in waves in response to wind; indoor tornadoes and vortices made of fog, steam, or fire; a transparent sphere containing water and sand which, when spun, erodes a beach-like ripple pattern into the sand surface. Kahn won a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” fellowship in 2003, and the National Design Award for environmental design in 2005.

Kahn lives and works in California.
